What do I need to change my address in Virginia?


There are four ways to change your address with the DMV:
 



  1. Online: Go to Virginia’s Change of Address page and provide your driver’s license number and birth date.


  2. By Mail: Accomplish a Virginia Change of Address Form then mail it to the Virginia DMV.


  3. By Phone: Call (804) 497-7100


  4. In Person: Go to a DMV customer service center or a Virginia DMV Select location.

How to fill out the Virginia Change of Address Form?

  7. Vehicle Registration Mailing Address

  8. Complete this section if your vehicle is kept at a location different from your residence address and you need the DMV to send the vehicle registration notice to that address, or if you need to inform the DMV about a vehicle that is garaged at a location other than your home.

    Indicate the following details for each vehicle:

       

    • Vehicle Make: Enter the model of the vehicle.


    • Title Number: Enter the title number.


    • Last 4 digits of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): Enter the last four digits of your vehicle’s VIN.


    • Mailing Address: Enter the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.


    • City: Enter the city of the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.


    • State: Enter the state of the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.


    • ZIP Code: Enter the ZIP Code of the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.


    • Country: Enter the country of the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.


    • Garage Jurisdiction: Enter the city, county, or town where the vehicle is garaged.


    • Date Vehicle First Located Here: Enter the ZIP Code of the mailing address where the notice will be mailed.

Tips for changing your Virginia Address

 

  • You can update your address online at the Virginia DMV website or by calling (804) 497-7100.
  • To change your address in person, visit a DMV customer service center with proof of identity, legal presence, Social Security number, two proofs of Virginia residency, and your previous state’s driver’s license (if applicable).
  • If moving out of Virginia, your driver’s license may be canceled unless you’re active-duty military or a Virginia resident working out of state. For moves to Virginia, you must get a new driver’s license in person.
  • Documents must be original and verifiable; photocopies are not accepted. False information is a criminal offense.
  • There’s no fee for an address update, but replacement documents require a fee. To return Virginia plates, mail them to P.O. Box 27412, Richmond, VA 23269.
