What is Form REG 227?

Form REG 227, Application for Duplicate or Transfer of Title, is used to request a duplicate vehicle title from the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) or transfer vehicle ownership to another person.

How to fill out Form REG 227?

You cannot use Form REG 227 to release a lien on a vehicle with an Electronic Lien Title (ELT). An ELT is a lien holder's electronic version of a paper title.

Duplicate Title

Mark the box to use Form REG 227 to request a duplicate title of your vehicle. Then, complete sections 1 through 3.

Transfer of Title with Duplicate

Mark the box to use Form REG 227 to transfer your vehicle title. Then, the seller must complete sections 1 through 4, and the new owner must complete sections 6 and 7.

Enter your driver’s license or identification card number.

Enter the state where your driver’s license or identification card number is issued.

CO-OWNER TRUE FULL NAME

Enter your co-owner's name.

DRIVER LICENSE/ID CARD NUMBER

Enter your co-owner's driver’s license or identification card number.

Enter the state where your co-owner's driver license or identification card number is issued.

PHYSICAL RESIDENCE OR BUSINESS ADDRESS

Enter the street address, apartment, space, or suite number, city, state, and ZIP code where you reside or operate your business.

COUNTY OF RESIDENCE OR COUNTY WHERE VEHICLE/VESSEL IS PRINCIPALLY GARAGED

Enter the county of residence or county where your vehicle is principally garaged.

MAILING ADDRESS (IF DIFFERENT FROM ABOVE)

Enter the apartment, space, or suite number, city, state, and ZIP code of your mailing address if it is different from your physical address.

SECTION 2 — LEGAL OWNER OF RECORD (LIENHOLDER/TITLE HOLDER)

Enter information about the legal owner of record or your vehicle's lienholder or title holder.

NAME OF BANK, FINANCE COMPANY, OR INDIVIDUAL HAVING A LIEN ON THIS VEHICLE

Enter the name of the bank, finance company, or individual having a lien on your vehicle.

BUSINESS OR RESIDENCE ADDRESS

Enter the apartment, space, or suite number, city, state, and ZIP code where the lienholder resides or operates his or her business.

SECTION 3 —MISSING TITLE STATEMENT

Requesting a duplicate of your vehicle title cancels the original one.

Illegible/Mutilated (Attach old title)

Mark the box if the certificate of title issued for your vehicle is illegible or mutilated. Then, attach your old vehicle title to your Form REG 227.

Mark the box if the certificate of title issued for your vehicle is not received from the prior owner.

Not Received from DMV (Allow 30 days from issue date)

Mark the box if the certificate of title issued for your vehicle is not received from the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV).
